Why do my emails have a "Be careful with this message" warning?
Why do my emails have a "Be careful with this message" warning?

Gmail may display a warning message when your email is opened.

The warning could look something like this:

There could be different variations of this warning.

"Be careful with this message" warnings are normal in Gmail; there's no need to be worried. Chances are good that your emails will still be delivered.

This message will show up if:

  • Both the "From" and "To" email addresses use the same domain.
For example, if you launch a campaign with internal team members, it's likely that they will use the same domain as your "From" email address. If you send a campaign to a simple "@gmail.com" email address, this won't take place; contacts outside of your internal teams shouldn't be impacted.

  • The email address for "Reply to" is different from the "From" email address.
For example, if Reply Tracking is enabled on a campaign, the "Reply to" email address will be different from the "From" email address.

To prevent this warning from appearing in future emails, you have two options:

1. Setup your DKIM authentication

Setting up DKIM (Domain Keys Identified Mail) for your sending domain will help email providers confirm that the message is from you and not a phishing scam. As a bonus, this will also remove the “sent on behalf of” text in your message header.

Here are the steps on how to set up the DKIM:

  1. Log in to your Digital Marketing Hub account.

  2. On the left menu, select "Settings."

  3. Navigate to the "Advanced" tab.

  4. Select "I will manage my own email authentication."

  5. In the corresponding DKIM field, enter your domain name and click "Generate." This will generate a TXT Record Name and TXT Record Value.
Please keep in mind that the values generated here will not be saved on the page. These values must be used to configure a TXT record at your DNS host.

  6. Click on "Save Settings".

  7. You can then add these as TXT records to your DNS at your registrar or hosting provider (e.g. Godaddy).
Your DNS host is generally the company you registered your domain with. Most DNS hosts will require the following items to set up your TXT record:

    Type
    Choose TXT.

    Name or Host
    - dk._domainkey (most common), or
    - the full TXT Record Name shown inside Digital Marketing Hub (less common).
Contact your DNS host to know which one to use.

    Value or Record
Enter the TXT Record Value generated in Digital Marketing Hub.

    TTL
This is "Time Till Live." Use your DNS host's recommended or default settings. If there is no default setting, we recommend 3600 (one hour).

As a reminder, DNS record propagation can take several hours. If it doesn't appear to be working right away, wait a few hours and try again.

2. Turn off Reply Tracking for your emails.

To do so, navigate to the Campaign Summary page for your email. Click the toggle to disable it.

Please note that Reply Tracking is always enabled in eMag and RBA campaigns. We cannot disable this for these campaigns.
