Free credit checks – frequently asked questions

Understand common questions about illion and Equifax credit reports, score differences and troubleshooting errors.

Updated over a week ago

Use this guide to understand common differences between illion and Equifax credit reports, why scores may vary, and how to resolve common credit check issues.

Why is the data different between illion and Equifax?

Credit reporting bodies such as illion and Equifax share approximately 90% of common data.

This means:

  • In most cases, both reports will contain the same information.

  • Around 10% of data may be exclusive to one bureau.

If your client’s information falls within that exclusive portion, it may appear on one report but not the other.

Note
Many major banks and some second-tier lenders are dual bureau. They review both illion and Equifax reports when assessing credit applications.

Example: Directorship information

Directorship data is sourced from ASIC.

Both bureaus access ASIC data. However:

  • If a directorship is newly registered,

  • And a recent enquiry was made with Equifax,

The directorship may not yet have refreshed through to illion.

Timing differences can result in temporary discrepancies.

Why are credit scores different?

Credit scores can vary between illion and Equifax for several reasons.

Different scoring algorithms

Each bureau uses its own proprietary algorithm to calculate a credit score.

These algorithms:

  • Apply different weightings to various factors

  • Assess risk differently

  • Use separate modelling approaches

As a result, scores may differ even where data appears similar.

Unique data sets

As noted above, each bureau may hold some exclusive data. This can influence the overall score.

Different scoring scales

  • Equifax scores typically range from 0 to 1200.

  • illion scores typically range from 0 to 1000.

Because the scales differ, direct score comparisons should be made carefully.

Why is no data returned for a client?

If no data is returned, it may mean:

  • The consumer does not exist in the bureau database.

  • The identifying information does not match bureau records.

If this appears incorrect, the client must contact illion directly to update or correct their information.

What does illion error 52 mean?

Error 52 – “Mandatory field is not supported” generally indicates:

  • The address entered is not recognised by illion; or

  • The consumer does not exist in the bureau database.

Review the client’s details carefully before resubmitting the request.
