Website Hosting Explained

Understand the difference between web hosting, domain name hosting and email hosting, and what Connective provides through My Website.

Updated over a week ago

At Connective, we provide website hosting services through My Website, which includes regular updates, platform maintenance and enhanced security features to keep your website running smoothly.

This article explains the difference between web hosting, domain name hosting and email hosting, and outlines what Connective does — and does not — provide.

Web hosting (provided by Connective)

Web hosting refers to the server space where your website files are stored. Every website needs hosting — without it, your website files have no place to live and cannot be accessed online.

When you subscribe to a Connective My Website package, Connective provides:

  • Secure website hosting

  • Regular updates

  • Platform maintenance

  • Enhanced website security

This ensures your website remains online, stable and secure.

Domain name hosting (not provided by Connective)

A domain name is your website address, such as: www.mycompany.com.au

Domain name hosting is the service that manages this address and ensures it directs visitors to your hosted website.

With a Connective website package:

  • Connective hosts your website,

  • but you must arrange domain name hosting with your preferred provider.

Your domain host manages:

  • Domain registration and renewal

  • DNS settings (e.g., pointing your domain to your Connective-hosted website)

A domain is essential because, without it, visitors would only be able to access your site using a server address (IP address), which is not practical or professional.

Email hosting (not provided by Connective)

Email hosting provides domain-based email addresses, such as: [email protected]

Because email hosting is linked to your domain hosting, Connective does not provide email hosting services.

You can choose any provider that suits your business needs, such as:

  • Microsoft 365

  • Google Workspace

  • Your domain host’s email service

Choosing a hosting provider

Connective does not recommend specific domain or email hosting providers, as the right solution depends on your business needs, budget and technology preferences.

When choosing a provider, consider:

  • Cost and renewal fees

  • DNS management tools

  • Email storage and limits

  • Integration with your existing systems (e.g., Outlook or Google Workspace)
