Use this guide to create new people categories in Mercury Nexus and understand how they sync to your Digital Marketing Hub (DMH) account as tags. Tags allow you to target specific groups of contacts for campaigns and automations.
Why categories and tags matter
People categories in Mercury Nexus are one of the most effective ways to segment your database. When assigned correctly, these categories sync to DMH as tags, helping you:
Create targeted email campaigns
Build groups for marketing automation
Send communications to specific client types or interests
Filter contacts based on behaviour or attributes
Before you start
You must have Admin access in Mercury Nexus to create or manage people categories. If you don't have Admin access, you can contact your Principal owner.
Create a new people category in Mercury Nexus

A. Use the + Add button to add a new category.
B. Use the Delete button to remove a category.
C. Double-click an existing category to rename it.
Avoid renaming or deleting categories already in use without reviewing which contacts are assigned to them.
How categories sync to Digital Marketing Hub
Once you create a people category, it will sync to DMH automatically as a tag, as long as at least one contact who meets the DMH sync criteria is assigned to that category.
Sync normally occurs within 1 hour
Tags appear on the contact record in DMH
Tags can be used in segmentation, lists and automations
Categories that are not assigned to any DMH-eligible contacts will not appear as tags in DMH.
Assigning the new category to contacts
After creating your category, assign it to the relevant contacts.
DMH will pick up the updated category assignments during the next sync or when you force a sync.
